It’s been a fantastic summer for Boston GLOW. We’ve been quiet on the blog lately but hard at work behind the scenes, planning the year ahead and wokring closely with our Girl Leaders and this year’s IGNITE Change finalists – even having some fun too!
Our mentors and IGNITE Change finalists have taken advantage of Boston’s best cultural offerings, with visits to the Museum of Fine Arts and a picnic dinner to see Shakespeare on the Common, among others.
Our 2012 IGNITE Change finalists have been working really hard this summer. We are so pleased to share that THREE of our winners will be heading to college in the fall! Congrats to Giselle Bonilla who will begin her coursework at Providence College in the Fall, Crystal Walker who will begin at Bunker Hill, and Zacorah Jackman who, after receiving her GED this year, will begin Northeastern’s Foundation Year in August. The young women will be preparing for careers in clinical psychology, biological research, and public policy!
Congratulations also to IGNITE Change Finalists Nasteho Ali and Franchesca Viaud who were selected for summer internships at Brigham and Women’s Hospital with the Student Success Jobs Program. Finally, congratulations to Finalist Jasmine Taylor who will be participating in an early college summer program at Spelman College in Atlanta!
The Boston GLOW leadership team kicked off the summer with a two day retreat to map out the year ahead, set goals, identify targets and brainstorm ways to improve what we do and how we do it. We are ever focused on expanding our reach, developing our infrastructure and growing our network to fulfill the mission we are so passionate about. We listened closely to our Girl Leaders and our Organized Women as well as our supporters and with that feedback, made some big decisions and set some high goals for our 2012-2013 season.
We are thrilled to share some of these key changes to our organizational structure and programming going forward:
· Our Organized Women (OW) told us some of you weren't sure how you fit into GLOW's mission, how you could join/contribute/lead and stay in touch. For that reason, we are moving to a membership model and are creating more structured opportunities for leaders and volunteers.
· Our Girl Leaders (GL) have shown us again this year what powerful ideas you have to change the world for women. We are inspired not only to help develop you as leaders but also to help implement your plans. So, this year, we are launching our third annual IGNITE Change Leadership Contest. We will still award scholarship prizes and laptops for the top seven finalists, but this year the winner of the contest will receive an additional $1000 grant to put her plan to change the role of women in the community into effect. She will receive the support of Boston GLOW by way of an internship and have the opportunity to see her plan become a reality.
· Our supporters have resoundingly expressed your interest in knowing more about what we do with the money we raise, specifically for the finalists of our IGNITE Change leadership contest. As such, we have launched a Spotlight on Girl Leaders, a monthly update on our work with IGNITE Change finalists on our website and blog. We've also developed a communications plan to better keep you informed about the work we're doing behind the scenes, where we're headed organizationally and what opportunities exist for those supporters who want to volunteer their time or contribute resources.
Boston GLOW has grown exponentially in two years thanks to each and every one of you, our generous and spirited supporters. We are endlessly grateful to all of you for believing in the mission of Boston GLOW and for your incredibly generous support throughout this year. You inspire us to continue working hard to grow this organization and look forward to sharing our growth with all of you throughout this year.
