2 Months to IGNITE the NITE 2013... And Proudly Introducing this Year's Powerhouse Team!

Hello everyone!

We hope you have all enjoyed a relaxing, fun and festive holiday season and are feeling as ready and excited as we are for the year ahead. Hard to believe the dawn of 2013 is around the corner - and even harder to believe that our Third Annual IGNITE the NITE is just TWO MONTHS AWAY from today.

When we started planning, February 28, 2013 seemed like lightyears from any date on a wall calendar or dry erase board - but now, it feels real. The good news is: we're prepared. More prepared than ever before. We've made some major changes to our planning strategy this year - in particular, putting a serious effort into recruiting as many of the very best volunteers we could possibly find to join us in making the event a smash hit.

We are so excited this year to have not just a small team of volunteers juggling every aspect of IGNITE the NITE but instead, several teams led by dynamic, energetic and dedicated Committee Chairs who each bring something unique to the table. We are thrilled to have each of these women as part of our task force to introduce them to our supporters!

Today, meet Crystal, Lily, Meghan and Becky, who are newcomers to IGNITE the NITE and Boston GLOW but have nonetheless jumped right into our planning and plotting for this year's event. We've asked each of them to explain a bit about themselves and why they wanted to be a part of Boston GLOW's biggest fundraising initiative of the year.

Tell us about you:

With 10 years of childcare experience I genuinely believe in the power of youth. Through my work with City Year New Hampshire, Camp Schodack, and a variety of schools I have seen young people accomplish amazing things with the support of adults that care. I believe with my whole heart that "It takes a village to raise a child" and it is all of our responsibility to serve as good role models and mentors for our youth. They are our future.

Who is your female hero?

I struggle to identify just one woman as my female hero. I see woman every day that stand up for what they believe in, fight injustices big and small, and try their hardest to leave this world a little better off then how they found it. These woman are all around us. They are my inspiration.

What is one thing you would like to see change for women in the world?

One simple thing I would like to see change for the better is more women supporting each other and less women bringing each other down. Especially, but not specifically in the middle school, and high school levels.

Tell us about you:

Daughter, Sister, Amateur Chef, Food Blogger, Real Estate Professional, Bostonian

Who is your female hero?

This is probably not what you meant, but my hero as a female is actually my parents. Both of them. Because they taught me that my voice (and my sisters's voices) and my contribution and my place mattered just as much as anyone else's, male or female. And they did it without ever needing to say those words. They showed us by living it in their relationship with each other and by always always encouraging us to speak up and out, that our words and opinions were always valuable, and that we could and should be and do anything we wanted...but to more directly answer the questions, Hillary is kicking some ass right now too.

What is one thing you would like to see change for women in the world?

I don't want it to be a big deal that we have more women in Congress than ever before, I want it to be normal. I want to stop hearing about the first woman this and the first woman that because women are everywhere. I want women to be valued by men, other women, political parties and governments both because we are different and because ultimately we are mostly the same.

Tell us about you:

I am a proud Tulane grad and native Bostonian hailing from Jamaica Plain. I have a background in both the restaurant industry and nonprofit fundraising campaigns, and I absolutely love event planning.  I can’t wait to celebrate some of the best female chefs in Boston, and make this our best IGNITE the NITE to date.

Who is your female hero?

Tina Fey and Katherine Hepburn

What is one thing you would like to see change for women in the world?

I would like to live in a world with more female world leaders and politicians.

Tell us about you:

I am a recent graduate from Skidmore College, taking steps toward what I hope will be a successful career in communications. Through my internships and work experience I have developed my interests in marketing, social media, public policy, public relations, and event planning. Focusing my energy towards a goal as fantastic as GLOW's is an incredibly rewarding experience, and I can't wait to contribute through the Marketing & Public Relations Committee. The 2013 IGNITE the NITE Gala is going to be an phenomenal event with an inspiring and lifechanging outcome and I couldn't be more excited to be a part of it!

Who is your female hero?

My female hero is Marissa Mayer, the current President and CEO of Yahoo. As the first female engineer at Google, she worked her way to the top as the company grew and was a long-time executive and spokesperson there. She is also the youngest CEO of a Fortune 500 company and is considered one of the most powerful women in business.

What is one thing you would like to see change for women in the world?

One thing you would like to see change for woman in the world - One thing I would like to see change for women in the world is increased confidence to demand equality in pay, education, and other opportunities.

....There they are! We are excited to introduce more of the team as our fundraising season continues - and to share our progress as we move towards our Big Day.
